Ciao ragazzi!
Quest'anno partiamo da una strana idea: 4 elementi + 1,
ovvero
Aria, Acqua, Terra, Fuoco
e...
WEB
; proprio così!
Da alcuni anni è apparso un nuovo habitat in cui muoversi, o
meglio navigare, sono nate nuove sfide con cui confrontarsi
e nuovi modi d'interagire. Tutto ciò prende il nome di
World
Wide Web
(WWW) o più semplicemente
INTERNET
.
Aria.
Ci serve per respirare, ovvio, ma comprimendola dentro
alle bombole l'uomo ha imparato a respirare anche sott'ac-
qua. È la stessa aria che ha gonfiato le vele dei mercanti
fenici, degli esploratori portoghesi, a far innalzare mongolfiere
e dirigibili, a far girare le pale eoliche e a far volare aeroplani
e aquiloni...
Acqua
. È vita... È nella pancia di ogni mamma dove i piccoli
si preparano alla nascita. Oggi beviamo la stessa acqua che
ha dissetato i dinosauri e che è piovuta sulla testa di tutti gli
uomini apparsi fino ad ora sulla Terra. Nel tempo l'uomo ha
imparato a usarla per irrigare i campi, per la navigazione e per
produrre energia. E tutta questa vita dove poserebbe i piedi (e
zampe e radici) se non ci fosse una terra?
Terra.
Un porto sicuro per ogni battello, una pianura dove
costruire città, sabbia per i deserti senza confini, zolle per
fertili campi, creta per i vasai, rifugio sicuro per le radici di
altissimi alberi o semplici arbusti.
Fuoco.
La scoperta più importante dell'uomo: il Fuoco che
scalda, che illumina, che cuoce e diventa fonte di energia.
Con il fuoco gli esseri umani hanno fuso il ferro e gli hanno
dato forma di spade, ma anche di chiodi per costruire case
più solide e di falci per tagliare il grano. Grazie al fuoco, l’uomo
ha trasformato il bronzo in statue, creato gioielli d'oro, dato
movimento a macchine sempre più complesse.
Sono solo pochi esempi di quello che l'uomo ha combina-
to con i 4 elementi: adesso a scombinare un po' le carte è
arrivato anche il quinto: Internet. In meno di un secondo le
distanze tra le persone si azzerano, abbiamo a disposizione
tutte le biblioteche del mondo e le notizie viaggiano più veloci
dei nostri pensieri.
Un ambiente nuovo, da esplorare, da
capire. Un mare di opportunità in cui
bisognerà imparare a navigare te-
nendo la rotta.
Ecco il perché di questo Diario
arrivato alla sua decima edizione:
guardare quello che è già acca-
duto per immaginare quello che
potremo far accadere.

Hi kids!
This year we're starting off with a new idea: we've added a
new element to the 4 we already know:
air, water, earth,
fire
and...
the internet
! This new space has been around
for some years now, where we can move around, or rather
navigate, set ourselves new challenges and interact in differ-
ent ways. That's what the
internet
is all about.
Air
. We need it to breathe, of course, but by compressing it
inside cylinders we've also discovered how to breathe under
water. It's the same air that swelled the sails of the Phoeni-
cian traders and Portuguese explorers, the same air that lifts
hot air balloons and airships off the ground, turns the sails of
wind turbines and makes kites and aeroplanes fly.
Water
. Water is life. Water is inside the tummy of every
mother who is about to have a baby. Today we drink the
same water that quenched the thirst of dinosaurs and has
rained down on the heads of everyone who has ever been
born on Earth. Over time, man has learnt to use it for ir-
rigating fields, for navigation and for producing energy. And
where would all this life put its feet (or its paws, or its roots)
if there was no earth?
Earth
. A safe harbour for every boat, land where we can
build cities, endless sand for deserts, turf for fertile fields,
clay for potters and a safe haven for the roots of tall trees
and little shrubs.
Fire
. Man's most important discovery: fire that gives warmth
and light, and heat for cooking and a source of energy. Hu-
mans have used fire to smelt iron and turn it into swords,
and also into nails to make their houses stronger and into
sickles for cutting crops. With fire, man has turned bronze
into statues, created gold jewellery, and made increasingly
complex machinery work.
These are just a few examples of what man has been able
to do using the four elements; lets shuffle the cards now
and look at the fifth element: Internet. The distance between
people can be overcome in less than a second; we have
every library in the world at our fingertips and news can travel
faster than thoughts.
A new environment to explore and to understand. A sea of
opportunities across which we must learn to navigate our
own course.
This is the purpose of this diary, which is now in its tenth
edition: to look at what has already happened and imag-
ine what else we can make happen.
