Può il capitano della più grande
nave container al mondo guidare
il proprio vascello nel Mare della
Tranquillità? No di certo, perché
questo “mare” si trova sulla Luna.
Il nostro satellite, benché sia privo
di acqua, possiede parecchi “mari”:
si tratta di zone pianeggianti della
superficie lunare, resti di antichissime
colate laviche che vengono chiamati
dagli astronomi “mari”. In totale sono
22, ma quello più famoso è il “Mare della
Tranquillità” dove allunarono le missioni
umane Apollo 11, Apollo 16 e Apollo 17.
SAILING TO SEA
Can the captain of the largest container ship
in the world sail the vessel on the Sea of
Tranquillity? Of course not, because this ‘sea’ is
on the Moon. Our satellite planet has lots of ‘seas’,
even though it lacks water. These are flat areas on
the lunar surface, which are the remains of ancient
lava flows that astronomers call seas. There are 22 in
total, but the most famous is the Sea of Tranquillity,
where the Apollo 11, Apollo 16 and Apollo 17 missions
landed, when they were sent on the Moon.
